Old Hickory Wagons 1880s huge lithograph in factory frame featuring Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans, from President's Office of the Kentucky Wagon Mfg. Louisville, KY.
Lot 510: Old Hickory Wagons 1880s huge lithograph in factory frame featuring Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans, from President's Office of the Kentucky Wagon Mfg. Louisville, KY.
Historic huge lithograph advertising the "Old Hickory " wagons manufactured by the Kentucky Wagon Mfg. Co of Louisville, Kentucky. The Old Hickory wagon line was named after President Andrew Jackson. Jackson’s toughness and determination reminded his troops of a firmly rooted Hickory tree, earning him the nickname"Old Hickory ". This lithograph depicts The Battle of New Orleans, where The United States achieved its greatest land victory of the War of 1812. The battle thwarted a British effort to gain control of a critical American port and elevated General Andrew Jackson to national fame. The British gambled and lost on a forward attack against American forces, dug into a fortified mud and cotton bale earthworks on the east bank of the Mississippi at Chalmette Plantation. British casualties far outnumbered those of the Americans. Jackson's victory set him on course to become the 7th President of the United States. The lithograph shows Andrew Jackson on horseback commanding preparations for the battle with an Old Hickory wagon delivering cotton bales to the front line for fortification. The litho also depicts the diversity of the army assembled by Jackson, consisting of Tennessee and Kentucky frontiersmen, Louisiana militia, New Orleans businessmen, Free Men of Color, Choctaw Indians, sailors, marines, and United States troops. This litho in a "self-framed " painted wood frame came from the President's Office of the Kentucky Wagon Mfg. Company. It may have been created on special commission, no other copies are known to exist. Measuring 30 " x 40 " framed, it is truly impressive in size, color and detail. Litho by Gies & Co. of Buffalo, N.Y., one of the very best lithographers of the late 1800s. This is certainly one of their finest lithos and one of the very top few farm wagon advertising lithographs known to exist!
