Founded in 1889 as the National Gas & Oil Engine Company, Ltd. By Mr. H. N. Bickerton in Manchester England creating the design and construction of gas engines suited to run on “town gas”. This National Gas Sn. 12070 utilizes the Otto 4 cycle operating principle and coasts against compression as its means of governing the speed until the governor allows the admittance of fuel. Engines of this design are noted for their unique deep drawing intake sound between 4 cycle operations and are fascinating to watch and hear. This engine Sn 12070 was imported from England by a long-time Coolspring Power Museum member in the late 1980’s from a well-known English collection. This National Gas Engine is one of few known and scene in the USA. The Engine retains its original paint and is in overall very good mechanical condition. It has had a professional repair to the exterior of the water jacket of the cylinder using the lock stich method-a preferred and recommended method to preserve this historic engine. An engine sub base is also included.
The Engine is being listed and sold as a donation to the Coolspring Power Museums newest project the M.A. N Diesel Engine Building. This new building will be the home to the oldest operational diesel engines in the world, the 1903 M.A.N. Air Blast Injected Diesel Engine. Fundraising goals for this project are over $125,000.00 and any portion of a bid of the estimate value of $6,500.00 for the National Engine will be tax deductible.
