1910 Marshall Colonial Class C
These tractors were built by Marshall, Sons and Co. specifically for export to English colonies. Tractors were shipped to Canada, South Africa, India, and Australian markets. This impressive example is a Class C that is powered by a vertical 2 cylinder gas engine and originally shipped to Canada. Repatriated to the UK from Canada in the 1980s, it spent its working life in Saskatoon. Marshall had its own subsidiary in Saskatoon, the British Colonial Tractor Agency, which assembled tractors shipped from Gainsborough in crates. Some 300 ‘Colonial’ tractors were built before production ended in late 1914 with the final batch going to Russia.
Impressive does not begin to describe this ultra scarce tractor. Although exact production numbers are unknown, they are low with just two complete tractors and one partial tractor remaining. The patina gives it just the right look and it starts and runs as flawlessly and beautiful as it looks. This original North American tractor represents a unique opportunity to own a tractor that has world wide appeal. The Marshall name is popular and prized on many continents making this tractor a solid investment for future appreciation. See our website for an expanded description and PLEASE read the fascinating story on how this tractor was found in Canada!
Without Perseverance, The Colonial May Have Been Lost!
In the mid 80’s a European tractor dealer made buying trips to Canada about 3 times a year. He always bought some tractors from a big salvage yard near Medicine Hat, Alberta. The salvage yard was along the highway number 1 (Calgary-Regina) in a small town called Dunmore. The business was called "Dunmore Tractors" One day the owner, Nick Didack, showed him a very bad quality Polaroid picture, asked him, “Would you know what this is? "
He definitely recognized the Colonial straight away but said he wasn’t sure... He told him that nobody knew what this was but he’d been told by the owner's daughter that it was very special. He told Nick that he was interested and he’d like to go take a look at it. Nick said that this was impossible now, the tractor was 1500 miles up north and the only way to get there was to hire a small private plane.
The European dealer told him that this was no issue and that he would pay for all the expenses of this trip with him. Nick then said that the lady was not ready to sell and that the presence of a foreigner would jack the price up... The dealer told him, “I won't say anything and you tell her I'm just your nephew travelling with you for company.” Nick told him, next time! After 15 “next times”, he still couldn't get to the tractor.
One day, he arrived at Nick’s and there was 2 feet of snow, and a -22 degree below zero temperature. His wife opened the door and told the dealer there was bad news, Nick was in the hospital and she wasn’t sure he'd ever come out...
The dealer told her that they were planning for many years to go and see that tractor and asked the wife if she could talk to nick about this tonight in the hospital. He stayed overnight in Medicine Hat and came back to see her the next day.
Finally, for five thousand dollars Nick would send his son with the dealer to look at the tractor. He immediately asked her when they could do this and she said, “If you have time he can go with you now.” The dealer was very surprised and told her doubted they could do it that quick because a plane had to be arranged to fly up North. She said, “No, the tractor is just a few miles from here!”
Nick had fooled the dealer the entire time! The tractor was at Seven Persons at the junction of Highway 3 and Highway 887. The owner was June Dawson, the granddaughter of the original owner. She said the tractor wasn't for sale and they would keep it as a family heirloom.
A small obstacle like that didn’t keep the tractor dealer down! Perseverance was his middle name! He stopped there every time he took Highway 1. One day she told him they would sell and use the money for more important things. They struck a deal. The dealer remembered the lady was very kind and she fed them a good Canadian meal. He also remembered paying for the tractor with red 1000 dollar bills sewed inside his shirt.
The tractor was then loaded onto a flatrack and went through the Canadian prairies to Halifax, Nova Scotia where it was loaded in a containership to Antwerp, Belgium. The tractor was sold to an English collector, who then sold it to another English collector. That collector then consigned it to the Pre-30 Auction with Aumann Auctions. That's the story of the Canadian Colonial!
