2025 Pre '30 Gas Engine Collection - Day 1

Originally designed in 1889 by Charles White and Arthur R. Middleton in Baltimore, MD, this engine (SN. 2003) was manufactured in 1903 (as indicated by the date stamped under the cylinder water funnel).
The engine was removed from a WV print shop in the late 1950s and was owned by Elmer Ritzman, founder of Gas Engine Magazine.
The White & Middleton engine, with its shelf-mounted cylinder and raised bearing blocks, exemplifies East Coast engine design of the era. It boasts a beautifully machined governor with push rod valve train, operates on gas, and features dual ignition (hot tube and electric igniter), ported exhaust, original muffler pot, and White & Middleton’s unique automatic cylinder oiler.

This beautiful original engine spent its working life on the Big Island of Hawaii. It was purchased by the current family and shipped to Washington in April of 2011. It was cleaned up and put onto a nice fabricated base with removable wheels for transport. The engine has always been stored inside thought it's life Including its working life in Hawaii and while it was in collectors hands in Washington. It has an original air start system along with a match start system. It still retains its original crank guard and is topped with a Michigan swingtop oiler. The Mietz & Weiss, developed in 1893, is a unique American-made hot bulb oil engine. Its distinctive design features an integrated fuel pump that injects kerosene directly into the hot bulb. This engine, Sn. 1988, is the smallest size made at 1-1/2hp, has an exceptional restored finish, features numerous machined surfaces, a copper fuel tank, and brass plumbing. It is currently mounted on a display-ready platform with wheels and water tank.
This 5hp Bessemer tank cooled engine (Sn.17335), manufactured in Grove City, PA circa 1910, is in all original condition and features both a rare star wheel igniter and hot tube ignition. It runs on gas with a governor controlled fuel valve and has a cross head connecting rod design. This engine, in very good original condition, is one of the smallest sizes made by Bessemer.
